Future of Nursing by the IOM
2008 saw the coalition of the Robert Wood Foundation and the IOM launch together with a two-year initiative to appraise changes in the nursing profession. Therefore, the report was written to form a map for the growth of nursing in the field of medicine. The report reflected the ongoing changes in the field of nursing which was graciously accepted by the American Nursing Association (ANA). This has lead ANA based associations be part of several activities which will help the field of nursing outgrow itself (Nursing World, 2018). The Campaign for Action was launched to help nurses and other medical practitioners achieve the goals of the IOM. This is being led by a collaboration between the Campaign and the National Academy of Medicine (Campaign for Action, 2016b). The ‘Campaign’ hopes to lead the field of nursing forward the path set by the Robert Wood Foundation for the betterment of American.
Influence of IOM Report and State-Based Action Collation.
Nursing Practice
To be a nurse, one expected to cover a wide field of skills in terms of promotion of health, prevention of diseases, care coordination, provide cure where probable, otherwise palliative care (NAP, 2011) One would expect this to be enough for matching the current needs of the American population, however it isn’t as simple because the American population is highly diverse which requires health professional’s further education on the matter, including patient-oriented medical interventions.
Nursing Education
The report has certain goals which it wishes to achieve in order to bring the desired enhancement in the field of nursing (NASEM, CAPIR & IOM, 2016a):
1 By 2020, 80% of the student body should have a Bachelor’s Degree.
2 Nurses should be encouraged to be part of residency programs.
3 Nurses with a PhD and an above qualification should be two folds from the present.
4 Institutes should provide an environment where nurses can get continuous education.
These points need to be achieved so that nurses can work on equal footing with other medical practitioners as it is important for them to coordinate with each other in the ever-evolving field of patient care.
Nursing Workforce Development
The profession of Medicine, nurses are the largest service providers. Their work quality speaks a lot about an institutes capability in providing quality and efficient care services. About a million prospective applicants are expected for the position of a registered nurse by 2022. It is expected that this nurse is highly skilled and be ready to face the growing concern of an ageing population (ANA.Aristotle, 2018). Therefore, nurses are expected to be most skilled in acute-care settings and long-term care, leading to the formation of many grant programs, such as the National Nurse Service Corps.
Formation of the IOM Report
An Initiative of Robert Wood Foundation Committee
The report was formed by forming an ad hoc committee which will look into the potential growth of the nursing workforce including their role in public health. Its aim was to create a collection of pioneering global suggestions, such as those addressing the provision of nursing facilities inside a crisis setting and medical education institutions capability for nurses (National Academies, 2018). The commission was expected to identify a specific framework and structure for intervention, as well as modifications at government and institutional level. Its suggestions addressed a variety of structure modifications, which would include creative methods to tackle the problem of lack of nurses in the U.S.
