Nurse Manager Interview
Introduction
The interview involves a nurse that manages the clinic at Our Lady of Guadalupe Free Clinic. Monica is her name and works in the capacity of the clinic director and is responsible for dealing with volunteers and the patients of OLOGFC. Set in her office, the interview showcases the role of a nurse manager and how experience is beneficial to coworkers and patients alike. Therefore, points covered in the interview are; staff engagement, the manager's role, conflict management, management style, and the kind of qualities required.
Question 1: What is your view on staff engagement?
It is challenging to inspire and motivate a proactive response from hospital employees and volunteers as a manager. Every manager's dream is to have a highly engaged team that implements initiatives that improve the hospital's work environment. A cohesive working environment will facilitate employee satisfaction, which promises positive outcomes for the patients (George & Laura Massey, 2020). Therefore, an engaged workforce helps in the implementation of personalized patient-centered care. Monica is aware that she can implement effective behavioral and leadership styles to help galvanize the workforce at OLOGFC.
Question 2: What roles have you found yourself in management?
The definition of a hospital manager can be one-dimensional and box into a particular set of standards. Granted, a manager must adhere to an unwavering set of responsibilities, including the planning and coordination of health services. This involves supervision of physicians, health information technicians, and patient medical records improvement (study.com, 2020). However, an efficient hospital manager needs to have an extensive set of skills to make sure a hospital runs smoothly. For instance, they need to understand economics and human relations and record proven managerial conduct. In addition, a manager is exposed to intense paperwork and human interaction; therefore, written and verbal communication is crucial to any form of success.
Question 3: How do you handle conflicts?
A workplace environment is bound to get entangled in personal and interpersonal conflicts. The primary type of conflict happens between nurses and patients or their families. This is due to the disparity in perception regarding patient care being administered. It is a conflict that is unavoidable as it is hard to predict the nature of clients and behavior patterns of an extended group (Johansen, 2012). Therefore, nurses need relevant training on how to handle conflicts in the hospital. Implementation of conflict management strategies depends on the individual nurse and their personality. Therefore, it is essential to understand the nurses and how they respond to pressure and conflict as managers.
Question 4: Does your leadership style inspire the success of your employees?
Management in the modern age is multifaceted, requiring individuals to have multiple skills at once. Some of the skills are technical, while the others are individualistic, meaning they come more naturally to others. A virtual drive for success is a team's motivation, performance, and job satisfaction which stem from effective nurse management. Monica believes in a democratic style of leadership where the staff is encouraged to participate in decision-making. She believes that the approach will provide the nurses with a sense of responsibility and accountability for their actions (University J. C., 2021).
Question 5: What qualities do you look for?
Management strategies are only as good as the teams tasked with implementing them. Monica understands this and has a set of qualities that she looks for in anyone joining the team. Communication is an essential element of her leadership strategy; therefore, she requires open communication and sharing ideas with fellow team members. An efficient communicator is likely to have good relationships with peers; consequently, it is easy to offer professional and personal support (Deering, 2021). Lastly, diversity is essential in the creation and success of a nursing team. Everyone has his unique experiences and knowledge that may influence the interworking of a team. When these qualities come together, there are better outcomes with conflict management, racial understanding, and communication.
Reflection
Leadership carries a considerable level of influence towards others to make sure they become the best version of themselves. Nursing is no different and maybe has the highest level of influence to ensure improved quality of care and direct participation in clinical care. Leadership in nursing is concerned with the expertise of the nurses and the impact it will have on the health of patients. Therefore, a manager requires professional skills and personal characteristics that make them capable of maintaining balance for the patients and staff....
