Hello Illuminaties, It is clear that Mr. Beardley’s case requires the interventions of both an occupational therapist (OT) and a physiotherapist (PT). Inter-professional collaboration in patient care is essential in helping to achieve positive outcomes from various perspectives represented in the different approaches that the varied professions take in solving patients’ problems. The overlapping scopes of PT and OT based on concerns for injury and functionality may be the best approaches to solving this case (RNAO, 2013).
On his reasons for being resistive, Mr. Beardley is most likely unaware of the need to engage in physical activities, or the pain is worse, and the caregivers did not perform sufficient pain assessment tests on him. Either way, the patient requires proper engagement with the team to ensure that he is aware of the consequences. It is agreeable that the patient’s decision should be respected, but in some cases, proper counseling is likely to help. This may be essential if it is established that the patient has impaired cognitive function.
