Information technology is common in healthcare more than ever before, and using evidence to decide on the best fit technology is necessary to improve outcomes (Brenner et al., 2016). IT capabilities have made it easier to capture data and research evidence, which helps improve health outcomes and health care delivery (Catan et al., 2015). Evaluating how IT helps improve the quality of health care and the coordination of care helps determine IT capabilities best fit in different healthcare settings (Cresswell, Bates & Sheikh, 2017). There are differences in the efficiency and efficacy of information technology advancing healthcare and health-related services.(2) Search the Internet for information on the current state and future plans for information technology in nursing. List and discuss three current or future initiatives.
Monitoring devices
There are different choices to improve patient monitoring, such as s portable monitoring devices to check the oxygen levels, respiratory rates, and ECG/ EKG. Data and information is transmitted via devices, making it easier to track patients.
Internet of Things (IoT)
IoT refers to different devices that are connected to the internet, and they collect data from different sources. Wearable devices are likely to be most commonly used to alert nurses and be connected to electronic health records. Access to more data and information reduces the risk of errors and helps to support individualized care.
Electronic health record (EHR)
There is increased focus on electronic health records (EHR) to improve patient safety and the quality of care. The technology is useful to nurses as it facilitates patient scheduling, task management, patient reports, and patient workflow, besides accessing patient records.
