Culture is of major importance in health sciences practice and research since it enables and facilitates effective work in multi-cultural and cross-cultural situations.Cultural competence serves to enable agencies, systems, as well as groupings of professionals to function in an effective manner to understand the needs of groups who access health care and health information. It also allows them to participate in research in an all-encompassing partnership in which the health care provider and the user of the health information meet on common ground (Whittemore, 2009).
Taking culture into consideration in health sciences practices and research helps to close the disparities and gap in healthcare. It allows health professionals to have cultural competency which helps physicians and patients to come together and discuss health concerns without any cultural dissimilarities hampering their conversation, but enhancing it.
