Overview
The lymphatic system a critical component of the immune system and comprises a transport system that functions together with the circulatory system. Its main function involves relaying surplus interstitial fluid from the interstitial space back into circulatory blood through the thoracic duct. Together with the surplus interstitial fluid, surplus proteins and wastes are relayed back to the circulation. The system also functions as a medium for immune cells and facilitates immune reaction. The systemic lymph nodes sieve the interstitial flow thereby breaking down viruses, bacteria and other wastes (Margaris & Black, 2012). The lymphatic system constitutes a secondary circulatory network of extremely fine vessels as well as tubes referred to as lymphatics which drain lymph from the entire body. Lymph is made up of water, protein elements, salts, urea, glucose, lymphocytes (B and T-cells) and other elements. Lymphatics are exhibited all over the body except in the central nervous system. This lymphatic system constitutes majorly the red bone marrow, spleen, lymph nodes, thymus gland and the tonsils. (Szuba et al, 2003).
* The red bone marrow
The red bone marrow is a soft, spongy tissue located in the central cavities of axial as well as long bones. It constitutes hematopoietic tissues and adipose cells contained in vascular sinuses intermingled in a meshwork of trabecular bone. It is the major organ for blood cell production such as neutrophils, basophils, eosinophils, and lymphocytes. The lymphocytes differentiate into B- and T-cells. It is also the site for B-cell maturation while T-cells mature in the thymus (Travlos, 2006).
