Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common neurobehavioral diseases that present for treatment in adolescents and children. ADHD syndrome is usually chronic with eminent impairment and symptoms traversing into adulthood. Oftentimes, ADHD co-occurs with associated disorders such as anxiety, mood, disruptive, and substance abuse. This paper analyses the signs and symptoms of ADHD.
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is a syndrome characterized by three subtypes of symptoms: they include inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. Each of the three categories has a unique course and pattern of development (American Nurses Association, 2014). Patients who present predominantly inattentive subtype of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder are often characterized by reduced speed of cognitive responding and processing and reduced ability to concentrate their attention (Wilens & Spencer, 2010). Additionally, children with this subtype are often “off task,” seem to be daydreaming, and have sluggish cognitive tempo. Some signs of this subtype include failure to follow through, difficulty to focus attention, and inability to provide keen attention to details leading to careless mistakes.
