Summary of the Problem and Potential Middle-Range Theory
Many inventions and innovations in the past decade have enriched healthcare provision services. However, the healthcare sector faces the challenge of effective implementation of the available medical advancements to improve healthcare provision (Locsin, 2001). The mid-range theory of advancing technology, caring and nursing can be successfully employed to tackle this challenge. This article aims to show how a borrowed theory of Technological Competency as Caring in Nursing can be used to improve implementation of new medical advancements for better health care provision.
Theory of Technological Competency as Caring in Nursing
Combined knowledge generated from different disciplines enables nurses to provide competent services and craft firm and informative actualities from the nursing occupation (Theofanidis & Fountouki, 2008). Nursing has many correspondences with related disciplines and an assorted set of professional problems (Theofanidis & Fountouki, 2008). Therefore, borrowed theories from other disciplines can be used to provide adequate descriptions, explanation, predictions and solutions of nursing phenomena CITATION Vil01 \l 1033 ( Villarruel, Bishop, Simpson, Jemmott, & Fawcett, 2001). It is necessary for nurses to acquire technological competency due to the new advancements in the sector healthcare and delivery CITATION Bro09 \l 1033 ( Brodell, 2009). Modern technology has led to dehumanization by the use of machines as well as the objectification of patients and nursing care. Dehumanization in the clinical environment involves the presence of machinery and equipment that are engaged in the management of patients through life support and other extensions of machinery CITATION Bar01 \l 1033 ( Barnard & Sandelowski, 2001). Technology is an aspect that nurses must work with and around it by making it compatible and supportive in nursing care. Therefore, it is recommendable for nurses to develop ethical awareness and develop their knowledge and skills to avoid tampering with the effects of technology CITATION Bar01 \l 1033 ( Barnard & Sandelowski, 2001). The theory of Technological Competence is suitable to enhance the implementation of new medical achievements and facilitate the provision of better health care.
A Brief History Theory of Technological Competency as Caring in Nursing
Nurses usually use technical practices and apparatuses in ethical and professional ways to enhance their healthcare provision capabilities. The theory of technological competency as caring in nursing was established by Rozzano Locsin in 1998. The model he developed was centered on Boykin and Schoenhofer's Nursing as Caring Theory that he enhanced with the aspect of technology. CITATION Bro09 \l 1033 ( Brodell, 2009). The Boykin and Schoenhofer's ideology dictate that the nurse is accountable for the sick person at the nature he or she is at in that particular moment. Additionally, the theory advocates that there is no failure or inadequacy that nursing is unable to correct since the personality of a nurse is caring. However, the activities carried out during nursing a person are not directed at causing changes to the patient's situation that will favor achievement of goals set by the nurse. The activity of providing nursing care improves the relationship between a patient and the nurse CITATION Bro09 \l 1033 ( Brodell, 2009). Locsin depicts nursing care incorporated with technology as an intentional move towards caring CITATION Bro09 \l 1033 ( Brodell, 2009). Intentional Caring is exhibited in medical fields when nurses engage in activities such as touching a patient while making facial gestures followed by nurses checking various equipment and other forms of technology serving the patient (Locsin, 2001). Locsin (2001) defines intentionality as an act that involves intentional value addition, and will in actions, personality and communication. Locsin (2001) goes further to mention that the intentions of nursing are revealed by the knowledge of the actual meaning of nursing. Nursing as Caring is the focus of nursing as a profession that involves nurturing persons to live and grow in care. Therefore, technological competency as caring incorporates nurses who use the cognitive and mechanical technology and they have knowledge that when machineries are employed to care-giving activities the efforts must be intentional portrayal of caring.
Literature Review
Brodell (2009) research evaluation states that embracing personal digital assistant (PDA) can help student nurses and nursing instructors to understand and implement the technology. PDAs can be effective for use in both learning and practice centers. PDAs help nurses to accesses information on medication, dosage calculations and other needs in time reducing medication errors in the areas of practice CITATION Bro09 \l 1033 ( Brodell, 2009). The PDA technology can help nurses to accesses handbooks, medical dictionaries, laboratory instructions, drug dosage calculators, diagnostic tests and decent nursing procedures CITATION Bro09 \l 1033 ( Brodell, 2009). Therefore, technological competency can help improve nursing care by the provision of ready made information at the particular time of need. In the research carried out by Brodell (2009) to show the student nurses' perceptions of technology as caring; it was found that students rated the benefits of technology as a caring tool. Also, the students showed that their acquaintance with technology was average as well as the use of PDA nursing resources. Therefore, the study suggested that there was a need for more efforts in hi-tech care education for the nursing fraternity.
