How COVID-19 has Affected my Nursing Practice
The start of the Covid-19 crisis negatively impacted the nursing profession and other healthcare workers such as physicians, clinical officers, laboratory officers, and surgical officers. During the first few months after the first diagnosis of Covid-19, there was widespread fear and anxiety among the nurses worldwide. As the nurse-to-patient ratio increased three times, 76% of nurses in the United States (US) were reported to experience massive exhaustion and burnout (International Council of Nurses, 2021). However, despite the fear, anxiety, and increased burnout and turnover rates, the Covid-19 crisis has steered some noticeable progress within the nursing profession. The essay will look at the positive impacts Covid-19 has had on my nursing practice.
Even though scary and exhausting at first, the Covid-19 crisis has accelerated collaboration in interprofessional teams. Before vaccines were rolled out, every person's eyes and hopes were on the healthcare workers to help them survive the deadly virus alive. All healthcare workers, including nurses, had to create solutions and save the country and the world in general (American Organization for Nursing Leadership, 2021). Therefore, teamwork and collaboration among nurses and other healthcare professions have improved.
The Covid-19 pandemic has opened several opportunities for professional advancement in a bid to create and find solid interventions now and in the future. Nurses have been motivated to grow their profession by enrolling themselves in continuous professional development programs and research bodies. There has been an increased desire to learn and do more to equip themselves with adequate knowledge and skills (American Organization for Nursing Leadership, 2021). The knowledge is necessary to tackle the Covid-19 question entirely and adequately solve any future question.
