HOSPITAL ACQUIRED INFECTIONS: THE UNCHARTED KILLER
Visiting a Health care facility? Beware. Your actions can spread serious infections.
What are Hospital Acquired Infections?
These are simply infections spread/acquired in the hospital and medical care facilities.
Hospital-acquired infections have persistently manifested as cataclysmic problems. These are also known as nosocomial infections and usually emerge from one’s stay at a medical facility/ hospital (Banach et al., 2015). For these hospital-acquired infections, the infection is not apparent prior to the medical care and care delivery. This means that the infections are not present or nurturing at the time of visit to the hospital. The cases of healthcare-associated infections persist with the increased complexities of medical care and increased antimicrobial resistance.
These are a critical health care concern as they account for ten percent of deaths in healthcare settings, thus, are a preventable yet deadly threat to human safety. Visitors may include any guest to the hospital that may be visiting a patient or a hospital staff member. Visitation in hospitals is inevitable thus very common and frequent as visitors check up on their hospitalized loved ones. Visitors, as well, can act as vectors for microorganism transmission in the health care facilities. They are also at potential risk of acquiring infections in the course of their visits. Visitor’s risk levels of acquiring an infection in the course of a hospital visit depend on their immune status, the kind of pathogens and the extent of exposure to the pathogens. It is still a challenge to protect visitors of patients on airborne precautions. Hence, the adherence of hospital visitors with/to infection control guidelines and precautions is crucial in fighting hospital-acquired infections. Some visitors such as volunteers and non-hospital appointed clergy may be unavoidably visiting more than one patient. These visitors require need more stringent infection control and prevention precautions as afforded to hospital staff.
These are increasingly apparent and leading causes of the increasing health care costs, morbidity, and mortalities in the health care system. Hospital-acquired infections are the inadvertent outcome of care delivered by healthcare facilities.
Who are at risk?
Healthcare-associated infections can spread from and to the hospital staff, the visitors and the patients.
Evidence-based Source
According to the World Health Organisation Fact Sheet, infections acquired in health care settings are the most common inimical and detrimental events in the health care delivery globally.
Prior investigation in a given hospital setting has implicated the spread and source of tuberculosis throughout the hospital to a hospital visitor.
