Homelessness and Mental Illness Benchmark-Project Change Proposal
Mental health and homelessness heavily impact different societies and need proper clinical intervention. Many changes have been considered to restore the effects of homelessness and mental health. Mental illness is a critical problem majorly experienced among the homeless. Therefore, the two concepts are critical since they determine the health of a larger portion of the community. Many antisocial challenges come from homelessness and may jeopardize mental health. Mental health determines the overall engagement in contemporary society. Therefore, initiating the change proposal is essential since it will restore the mental health of the homeless.
Background
Mental illness and homelessness are intertwined and need a reliable solution through the change proposal. It is majorly noted among low-income individuals, especially those below the poverty line (Jensen, 2018). In the United States, Cuyahoga is among the counties which heavily experience homelessness and mental illness due to low income and reduced employment. Based on clinical perspective, mental illness is critical since it alters the normal body functioning and metabolism and may lead to different antisocial behaviors such as suicidal ideation. Therefore eliminating mental illness and homelessness is a significant aspect of restoring individual mental health. Mental illness and homelessness are critical since they alter cognitive functioning, leading to substance abuse and anxiety (Jensen, 2018). Besides, mental illness may also impact the populations by exposing individuals to PTSD and depression. Therefore mental illness and homelessness need effective management to curb possible challenges that may jeopardize the future health of low-income individuals.
Clinical Problem Statement
Mental illness is a critical clinical health issue that jeopardizes normal body functioning and is heavily promoted by homelessness. It is a clinical problem that needs evidence-based practice to address. Pregnant women are among the populations heavily impacted by homelessness and mental illness. Additionally, it affects the adolescents by reducing their capacities to engage, socialize, and with their peers. Therefore, mental illness and homelessness must be addressed to reduce the adverse impacts on the identified populations.
Purpose of Change Proposal
The purpose of the change proposal concerning the provision of patient care is to establish a framework for improving mental health and reducing adverse impacts such as depression, antisocial behaviors, and anxiety. Patient care involves meeting the health needs of different populations and reducing possible challenges such as cognitive problems. The proposal promotes psychoeducation, an essential process that restores mental health and growth. Mental health is a significant requirement for any individual; therefore, those impacted by homelessness must undergo proper psychoeducation other than the normal health programs. Therefore, the change will consider mental illness from homelessness a critical problem requiring timely health intervention.
PICOT Question
Among homeless individuals (Population), how effective is Psychoeducation (Intervention) compared to relapse prevention (Comparison) in reducing the mental illness (Outcome) within five months in the community (Time)?
Literature Search Strategy
The literature search strategy employed was six model strategy. The first step of the model involved identifying the topic of mental health and homelessness. The topic identification was significant since it determined all the remaining phases of the model. After the topic identification, the researcher conducted a literary search using specific medical databases, especially PUBMED. The database was considered since it provides valid and reliable clinical information. The third stage of the model involved developing arguments and linking them to the PICOT question. The fourth stage involved a literature survey in actualizing the research and devising a strategy of addressing mental issues. The fifth stage of the literature search strategy was literature analysis and critique. The last stage involved writing a comprehensive literature review to ensure that the generated proposal was adequately supported by reliable research.
Evaluation of Literature
According to Jensen (2018), there is a positive correlation between mental illness and homelessness, with the impacted population falling below the poverty line. The study is effective since it provides reliable data necessary for addressing the key problem of homelessness and cognitive issues. It is also effective since the researcher advocate for psychoeducation as an appropriate intervention in reducing the effects of mental illness and homelessness. Therefore, the study provi...
