Healthcare Essay: Workflow
Workflow is the set of duties for different employees to achieve within a period, with different objectives, attached to individuals working on them, the timeline, procedures to achieve them, and their evaluation process. According to Cain and Haque (2008), healthcare systems have different workflows, some organic, and some straightforward. Organic workflows are those planned and can be adjusted during the work, while the straightforward are those done in a specific format until the end. Different sectors in the healthcare department have various elements that generate their workflows (Cain & Haque, 2008). This research discusses the different workflow elements in hospital admission, inpatient encounters, outpatient encounters, the impacts on experience in various healthcare settings, gives an example of a workflow, and discusses EHR supports to each step in a chosen workflow in one of the healthcare sectors.
The first workflow discussed is the hospital admission. This is the keeping of a patient within the hospital until they can recover from their medical condition. In this case, the presumption is that a medical examination has been done, assessed, and the medical personnel are sure the patient will need to stay within the facility until recovery. The procedure followed is taking the data about the patient for identification, medical history, identifying any procedures they take at home, and will be essential to the recovery while in the facility. Identification of the allergies, sleeping patterns will as well be captured, then the patient is shown their room where they will be staying. Once admitted, the patient is trained to use the rooms, showers, telephones, and anything essential for their recovery. It will be the duty of the hospital to educate them on the visiting hours, and checks during the period.
For inpatient encounters, their interaction with healthcare personnel to derive facts and assess the patient during treatment...
