Banner Health is a non-profit healthcare network spanning six states across the United States. The network comprises 30 hospitals and a diverse range of specialized facilities in its coverage area. It deals in a wide array of services, including emergency care, outpatient care, hospice, outpatient surgery, home care, rehabilitation services, labs, primary care, and pharmacies. The organization’s operational model counts on its pool of donors who finance its needs and enable it to serve its target audience and smoothly run its operations (Banner Health Official Website, 2022). As of 2017, the organization's total net income is $5.7 million, while its revenue exceeded $7 billion (Banner Health Official Website, 2022). Hence, the organization has a considerable financial capacity.
Organization’s Readiness Status
This report aims to lay out the strategic plan for Banner Health, for which it is essential to evaluate its readiness to serve the needs of citizens in the next decade. Firstly, it is notable that Banner Health is a large organization with a stable revenue stream. Therefore, the network is primed to expand with the growing demand for healthcare services in the next decade. The assumption of demand growth is based on the current outlook of the healthcare sector amid the aftermath of the pandemic and the number of patients with chronic diseases. The findings suggest that 40% of adults in America are suffering from at least two or more chronic diseases, and the percentage tends to rise in the coming years due to the compounding impact of COVID 19 (CDC, 2022). The organization's financial capacity enables it to invest in expansion to cope with this exponential growing burden.
Secondly, the organization has a rich IT infrastructure, evident from its innovative response to the pandemic-induced restrictions. For instance, it ditched traditional waiting rooms and allowed patients to receive updates about the status of their appointments and all other necessary details while staying in their cars to minimize physical contact and subsequent infections (Leventhal, 2020). A similar approach was evident in restructuring the end-of-life visits and the adoption and widespread diffusion of its telehealth services (Leventhal, 2020). It shows that the technological resources are behind the organization's adaptability, which is important to keep pace with the emerging digitalization trends and IT-driven healthcare solutions.
However, the problem that hampers its growth in line with the future challenges is staffing issues. The organization is notorious for being constantly understaffed, and the intensity of this problem peaked during the surge of demand amid the pandemic. It is still 1000 nurses short, and the gap between demand and supply tends to widen. The high turnover rate is largely behind the underlying staffing issue. The organization keeps repeating the recruitment and does so mostly on an ad-hoc basis. However, there is no long-term solution to the turnover rate, which is the root cause for it not being adequately staffed (Feltman, 2022). The issue is behind mismanagement and precarious consideration of patient care in different hospitals. As mentioned earlier, the demand side pressure is likely to grow in the coming years.
