Psychotherapy treatments aim to help the patient and his family cope with the disease and the problems it causes. For each person, the most appropriate treatment is chosen in consultation with the psychologist and psychiatrist. In the treatment of drug addiction and Schizophrenia, psychotherapy goes hand in hand with rehabilitation and pharmacotherapy. When the disease sets in, it disrupts this natural progress. Psychosocial interventions aim to enable patients to acquire these essential skills. They help them set goals in the most critical aspects of their lives and work towards achieving them. When the acute phase of the disease has passed, many patients need help to rebuild their lives and make the best use of their abilities, enabling them to return to school, work and develop personal relationships and social relationships. It is essential not to consider the dynamics of psychotherapy but to focus on psychotherapy centered on reality and the concrete difficulties that the person must face.
Demonstrated Group Therapy Technique
A psychotherapy session technique for people living with Schizophrenia is depicted in this Video (Gerber, 2013). It's worth noting that each person exhibits just one prominent Schizophrenia characteristic, such as mood problem, cognitive dissonance, social anxiety, or dissociative behaviors, rather than a spectrum of them all. Check-in, previous week's homework, relaxation methods, and group conversation were among the tactics utilized in this session. The following are the session's high points:
The session began with an introduction of each group member, followed by the plan. The following things are on the agenda: The Group Norms are introduced. Check-in is quick. Discuss last week's homework, relaxation methods, a visit from a guest speaker, and next week's homework. The group standards were confidentiality, respect for one another, a session break, and contact information. To measure individual motivation, the therapist inquired how each member felt today on a scale of one to 10.
This includes the coping skills discussed in the last session. The therapist asked if anyone used these techniques during such situations to get out of the adverse effects. One member shared about such a situation when he felt depressed due to substance abuse, and then using the coping techniques got better for him. Another member talked about her position when she came out of his house to talk and connect with people. She came out to see her neighbors and speak to him. He felt crazy about the girl, but she managed to take deep breathing to gain control of herself again.
She used deep breathing techniques to help her manage her anxiousness. Then Bryan came, who shared his story about hearing voices from upstairs. He inquired of his neighbors as to what was going on. She said that she was in the process of rearranging the furnishings. In this way, he could check and authenticate his sensory information, allowing him to relax in this circumstance. The final person to speak related her story of being attacked by Mike, but she kept her composure and did not respond. As a result, all members could share their experiences and discuss breathing exercises as self-soothing strategies for anxiety management. Finally, the therapist declares the end of the session.
There are several forms of therapy for psychosis. Among these, we find individual, group, or family therapies. Various approaches are followed depending on the individual's needs.
Usually proposed approaches
1 Motivational therapy: aims to strengthen motivation and commitment to change.
2 Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Focuses on current problems and aims to modify problematic thoughts and behaviors.
3 Psychoeducation: offers adapted information (on illness, treatment, stress, alcohol, drugs, etc.) to help the person better understand what he is going through, his reactions, and his emotions.
4 Psychosocial rehabilitation: targets the person's strengths and skills to regain control of their life and gradually reintegrate into the community.
5 Vocational rehabilitation: aims to develop a study or work plan based on the aspirations and interests of the person, taking into account their strengths, limitations, and the possibilities of the environment.
Efficacy of Group therapy
Group therapies do offer several advantages over solo ones. The group encourages adaptable social conduct by encouraging respectful listening and the exchange of ideas. He also helps the individual to put their experience into context and normalize it. Finally, the group fosters a sense of belonging and mutual help, allowing each member to conquer their challenges rapidly (Bryce et al., 2018). In "emergency" situations, psychotropic medications are utilized. These medications address the symptoms of Schizophrenia but not the causes of cognitive impairment.
Furthermore, it is now proven that psychotherapies greatly help patients with Schizophrenia to push them towards total or partial recovery. There are two types of psychotherapy, among which are further classified into several other types. A distinction is therefore made between individual and group psychotherapies.
Technique Evidence Support from Group and Individual
In individual psychotherapies, we have psychoanalysis, behavioral and cognitive therapy (CBT or cognitive-behavioral), hypnotherapy (EMDR), Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), etc. Group counselling for adolescents with anxiety is also found to be effective.
The type of therapy adopted is often a personal choice. For example, some psychologists prefer to use psychoanalytic treatment. In contrast, CBTs are widely recommended for the treatment of Schizophrenia and its associated disorders called co-morbidities. Recently, many researchers have found the evidence concerning the effectiveness of psychotherapies (CBT, systemic, psychodynamics) which concluded that CBTs are effective in fifteen clinical disorders studied out of sixteen, which places them in the first place.
