The IOM Report and Action Coalitions
The continuous innovation of the nursing sector is vital in the progression of our current health care system. In this paper, the importance, purpose, and effects of the IOM report and California action coalition to the nursing practice will be discussed.
The IOM report for the nursing profession is titled “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health”. This report provides details of the possible changes in the health care system, specifically the nursing profession, because of many factors such as the technological advancements, demands, population structure, etc. which encourage adaptation to fulfill the needs of the changing system and environment. Similarly, state-based action coalitions also encourage change and transformation in terms of the nursing community and the overall health care system. These influence the implementation of policies and programs that addresses various barriers present with the nursing practice, while maximizing the different opportunities and resources that are available, to boost the nursing profession in delivering quality care to its patients and clients (Welsh, et al. 2018). A big factor of the continuous development of nursing is also the healthy collaboration that is promoted by the recommendations, to reach the same goals. The implementation is backed by a diverse population of skilled nurses that perform a careful assessment, analysis, and planning to continue and promote the development of the nursing profession as a whole, from its education to the practice itself.
The Robert Wood Foundation Committee Foundation Initiative
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) in collaboration with the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) worked towards the implementation of the evidence-based recommendations found in the IOM report. The initiative consists of 2-year grants amounting up to $150,000 to state-based action coalitions that showed progress with putting the IOM recommendations into practice and reality. The grants are for the development of various programs that will prepare and hone nurses to become leaders in improving the health care system, nursing education, recruitment, accessibility to the communities, and diversity in the workforce. This paved the way for nursing to be involved and act as agents of change in the reformation of the health care system (Hassmiller & Reinhard, 2019).
Key Messages of the IOM Report
The IOM report contains four key messages that have a great impact on nursing education, leadership training, workforce, and practice. It mainly concerns the correlation of the nursing practice and the education and training, the educational system and training that the nurses receive, the relationship of nurses with doctors and other health care professionals in the United States of America, and the effectiveness of workforce planning and policymaking.
The nursing profession is being supported to maximize the extent of training and education that the nurses have received. This will result in a more extensive contribution of nurses in health care thus increasing the accessibility of the services for the American community. This also involves actions from the state and lawmakers to aid in maximizing the benefits and capacity of nurses in the field. Another concern is the needed changes with the level of education and training that nurses receive, both pre-licensure and post-licensure, to enable nurses to perform higher-level evaluation and treatment to their patients and clients. Concerning this, the relationship that nurses have with other health care professionals should also be emphasized, and this means that nurses are partners and should be treated as such in the health care ...
