SH: Bartender and he states he often “hooks up” with some of the patrons, both male and female after work. He does not always use condoms.
PE: WNL except for a lesion on the lateral side of the penis adjacent to the glans. The area is indurated with a small round raised lesion. The APRN orders laboratory tests, but feels the patient has syphilis.

Syphilis is an infection that is transmitted through sexual intercourse. If not treated, the infection can lead to adverse health complications. Syphilis is transmitted during sex. Sores are found on the anus, vagina, rectum, lips, mouth, and penis. Primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary are the four stages of syphilis (CDC, 2017). In each stage, there are unique signs and symptoms. The essay will elaborate on the four stages of syphilis.
The primary stage is depicted through a single multiple sore at the infection site. These sites may be at or around the genitals, the anus, the rectum, or even the mouth. The sores are usually firm and round but not painful during this stage (Ingram, 2018). The secondary stage is depicted through skin rashes, fever, and swollen nodes. These symptoms are usually mild and can go unnoticed (Runina et al., 2020).
