Understanding the importance of Evidence-based intervention in the treatment of illnesses is essential for any healthcare provider. It allows him to understand better how to utilize the new technologies, techniques, and other healthcare provision methods. In this article, the author would like to focus on the various evidence-based practices studied and implemented in the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) among children. The evidence-based treatments that would be discussed are examples of an FDA-approved drug, an off-label drug, and a non-pharmacological treatment for the said disorder. All in all, the author believes that by understanding the differences between these three, it becomes possible for any healthcare provider to ensure the best treatment for children with ADHD.
Treatments
An example of an FDA-approved drug for treating ADHD is methylphenidate. Methylphenidate, also commonly known as 'Ritalin,' is a first line psychostimulant medication used to treat children with ADHD. Being an FDA-approved drug, this medication has been tested and confirmed by regulatory bodies and government agencies to be safe for its intended use. For example, in one study by Gerlach et al. (2017), the authors noted that a systematic review of methylphenidate has helped improve the management and reduce ADHD symptoms. Additionally, the authors noted that distal outcomes usually triggered and caused by ADHD have been reduced, such as "a reduction in comorbid depression, substance-use and dependency, trauma-related visits to the emergency room and mortality." This suggests that this FDA-approved drug is beneficial, not only for reducing the symptoms of the disease for children but also for other adverse outcomes that might arise with hyperactivity.
