The article represents a precise manifestation of evidence-based practice (EBP). Although EBP precise definitions vary, EBP can be defined as an instructional method, intervention, or teaching plan anchored on scientific research, especially current research findings (Dillon et al.,2017). According to Dr. Sackett, while the EBP process is considered carefully and well thought out, it should not be cumbersome, complicate, or confusing (Amonette, English & Kraemer,2016). Instead, it should be simple and straightforward, and easily replicated without any need for advanced learning. According to the article, patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) rely on their dependants for help before and post-surgery. While patients’ physical and mental health improves postoperatively, the partners’ health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in CABG is poorly understood. It is hypothesized that when the partners’ physical and mental health is poor, their role and competency in caring for CABG patients are affected. This study sought to enhance understanding of patients’ and partners’ HRQoL pre and post CABG and determine whether patients’ and partners’ pre-operative socio-demographics and HRQoL predict their partners’ HRQoL 4 months after CABG (Thomson et al.,2013).
More often, research studies such as this immensely contribute to evidence-based practice. The study attempts to create a body of knowledge guiding effective health care interventions that can improve health outcomes. Evidenced-based practice is described as a problem-solving approach to clinical care. It involves integrating current best practices sourced from rigorous studies, health provider’s expertise, and patient values and preferences. Generally, EBP seeks to enhance clinical outcomes improve patient safety, and limit variation in patient outcomes.
This study expands evidence-based practices by generating valuable knowledge and pre and post CABG care for CABG patients and their partners in terms of physical and mental health. It would be essential to know whether effective physical and mental health amongst CABG patient and their partners or caregivers would lead to better health outcomes and prognosis amongst patients undergoing CABG. This study demonstrates that patients with poorer health outcomes after CABG had partners who also had poorer pre-operative physical health. Equally, the partners having poorer emotional functioning and poorer physical and social post-CABG were linked to poorer pre-operative mental health. Thus, this study demonstrates that both partners' and patients' health well-being during CABG pre-operative care is critical in determining the patients' post-CABG health outcomes. It implies that the physical and mental well-being of partners should be given adequate attention during pre-CABG care. The element of evidence-based practice in this paper is derived from the article's hypothesis, which seeks to test whether the partner's health well-being is a crucial predictor of health outcomes in a patient who has undergone CABG
