What are the four main families of probiotics?
Probiotics are microorganisms that may provide health benefits, and they are added to funds such as yogurt during food processing. The four main families of probiotics are Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Saccharomyces, and Streptococcus families. Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium are considered good bacteria, and Saccharomyces is a type of yeast (Tufts University, 2019).
What foods provide us with these bacteria? Are any of these foods unfamiliar to you? If yes, which ones?
The Lactobacillus family is mainly found in yogurt. Bifidobacterium is common in high-fiber foods such as apples, almonds, blueberries, artichokes, and pistachios (Robertson, 2017). Artichokes and pistachios are unfamiliar to me. Saccharomyces is type yeast, and the most common foods with probiotics include yogurts and fermented milk drinks.
