1] Evaluate the types of epithelial and connective tissues found in the epidermis and dermis of the skin in terms of anatomy and functions.
The skin has two regions, the epidermis, which is superficial, and the dermis is an underlying connective tissue (Yousef et al., 2020). The epidermis is the thin outer and visible layer of the skin mainly made up of keratinocytes (dead cells). The epidermis has the following five layers.
Stratum Basale
This is the deepest layer. The cells are cuboidal to columnar shaped, and cells in the layer mostly stem cells that produce keratinocytes (Yousef et al., 2020).
Stratum Spinosum
It consists of 8 to 10 layers of cells of irregular shape (Yousef et al., 2020). There are DNA-rich cells required for protein synthesis that will culminate in keratin (protein fibers) production.
Stratum Granulosum
The cells of this layer contain granules filled with keratohyalin, which is necessary for keratin production. It is a layer of cells where the keratinization process begins.
Stratum lucidum
This is a transparent layer found only in the thickest parts of the epidermis, such as the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. There are eleidin and lipoproteins, which prevent the entry or exit of water.
Stratum Corneum
