Diversity in the Workplace

Introduction
It has become of importance for transcultural nursing in the health care setting and as such, a requirement for the nurses practicing nursing. This is attributed to the multicultural phenomenon that has taken place in the American population. Furthermore, according to the census performed by the U.S. Bureau, indicated that one in every three person in the state comprises of different ethnicities aside from the non-Hispanic Whites (Huston, 2014). Furthermore, the projections by the commerce department indicate that there has been a rising of the population from other ethnicities apart from the non-Hispanic Whites. This will include half of the population by 2050 (Coleman, 2013). As such, because of the increasing multicultural society, transcultural nursing is an important component that requires nurses to offer care that is culturally competent. Furthermore, nurses that are culturally competent have understanding of the ways of the different cultures as well as the skill in identification of the various patterns of culture. Hence, this facilitates in provision of care that is individualised ion order to meet the goals for the established health care for a patient. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the importance of diversity in the workplace. It also evaluates the aspect of generational diversity as well as exploring the issue of underrepresentation among the Hispanics that are considered as a minority group. Furthermore, the paper attempts to consider the impact of diversity in the nursing field as well as the provision of competent nursing care (Burns, 2012).
The nursing practice involves provision of care that is holistic. The holistic approach entails addressing the psychological, spiritual, social, physical as well as emotional needs of the patient. Hence, it is vital to emphasize that the nurses needs to identify as well as meet the needs in a bid to provide individualistic care. Furthermore, this entails planning the care of the patient to meet their individual needs. Thus, there is need for consideration of the patient’s cultural differences in consideration of the plan of the care. This facilitates in provision of optimal care for the patient (In Goudreau, 2013)).
Importance of diversity on nursing
The importance for nurses examining the impact of diversity on their profession comprises comprehension of the use of cross communication skills such as the employment of cues in the different cultures such as eye contact. American nurses learn that maintenance of eye contact is vital when communicating to patients. However, among the Arabs, eye contact is considered impolite as well as aggressive. Moreover, among the Native Americans from the North regard eye contact, which is direct as improper as floor, staring during conversations is deemed as showing attentiveness to the speaker (In Mason, 2014). As such, comprehension of this cue among the nurses is of paramount in delivery of care to such cultures. Furthermore, touch is used differently among the different cultures as American nurses are taught to employ touch as a therapeutic communication means with patients. Some cultures forbid the touching of a male nurse on some parts of the female. This occurs among the Arabs and the Hispanic. In addition, Asians disapprove the touching of the head as it is viewed ...
