Creatinine is one of the widely studied ergogenic supplements used among athletes and other sportspeople to increase intramuscular levels of creatinine concentrations and enhance high performance during physical exercise and training adaptations (Kreider et al., 2017). Ribeiro et al (2021) opine that creatinine supplementation works to increase creatinine stores in muscles thus proffering performance benefits to users. Jagim et al (2018) have also found that both short-term, usually 5-7 days, and long-term use of creatinine can enhance performance with minimal adverse effects. This paper summarizes recent scientific journal articles published within the last ten years on the effective use and safety of creatinine.
Ribeiro et al (2021) focus on the appropriate timing of creatinine use, either before or after exercise, for maximum performance gains and muscle loading among users. Existing literature suggests that creatinine ingestion after exercise is ideal compared to when the supplement is taken before exercise but there seems to be a lack of mechanistic and physiological data to support this observation. However, Ribeiro et al’s (2021) study conclude that timing is not a major concern and calls for further investigations to confirm the impact of timing and intramuscular increase in creatinine content and performance.
