The term Communication simply refers to a process of sharing or relaying certain information between and or among people. Within a normal society setting, there exist a number of channels via which information can be relayed among people. Concisely, there exist channels like verbal or oral communication, written and non-verbal communication. Digging deeper, one finds other specific forms as examples including telephone communication, e-mails, blogs and websites in addition to the many forms of media and advertisement. This paper discusses the different methods of communication related to issues of public health as well as budgetary strategies to be considered by health educators in the event of implementing a communication plan.
Methods that can be used to reach intended audiences in a public health setting include the idea of Media Literacy; achieved by persuading positive behavioral communication. Such involves influencing the intended audience to adopt certain ideas based on overall outcome and rationale behind the information communicated (CDC NPIN, 2013). This aspect specifically touches on examples of social media platforms later outlined in this paper. It is understood that the internet has gained much prevalence over the past few decades albeit there being increased opportunity for wrongful communication. The resultant effect is that traditional forms of communication including hard copy letters, pagers, telegrams and fax have declined in usage. It is not surprising to see healthcare providers making use of electronic communication gadgets during their day-to-day routine as a communication strategic plan. In fact, interaction of people within the health sector has greatly increased as doctors and other healthcare providers conduct consultations and provide much sought after health information via online platforms like chatting and email. An applicable example of electronic or online-based communication program for the healthcare system is the HealthCommWorks system for the United States’ Centers for Disease Control. This is an internet-based platform that employs consensus of health experts and professionals via real-time messaging, social networking, and provides commendation, analysis and evaluation. Another one is the Online Health Program Planner of the Ontario, Canada, Public Health system, which facilitates evidence-based healthcare decision-making.
Another important method for consideration is Media Advocacy; this refers to strategical positioning of mass media in regards to topic selection with intent to improve on matters of public policies, directly touching on aspects of public health, outbreaks and or epidemics.
