1. For the family having a baby and the mother has stage-4 lung cancer, what does Atul Gawande mean when he states, “Having any kind of discussion that would begin to say, ‘look, you probably have only a few months to live. What do we do to make the best of that time without giving up on the options that you have?’ That was a conversation I wasn’t ready to have. I don’t think any of us were”?
This scenario was the first event that Dr. Atul Gawande disclosed in the film Being Mortal. It was a rare case scenario that would eventually water the eyes of its audience and surroundings. In the quotation used for this first question, I think Dr. Gawande wanted to imply that not all people are ready to be faced with such a conversation. The quotation he stated was full of irony in its ways that exceptionally break the heart of someone who hears it. The thought of what he stated was optimistic but at the same time accepting the reality of having a numbered days and the possibility of failure. Nevertheless, disregarding those things, I think Dr. Gawande wanted the people not to give up when faced with such circumstances. That although not all people have the guts to face it, they should still be ready since, sooner or later, such instances can be lessened and even be completely gone.
