In the past centuries and in most fields, there are usually a lot of allegations and assertions over certain phenomena without any scientific proof to back them up. This results in a situation where there is no body of work to be used as a point of reference. In case such a phenomenon happens again later. All recurrent occurrences were treated as new, isolated cases whose understanding needed to be worked out from scratch. The same was the case in nursing practice before the development of evidence-based practice. There is, however, theory-based practice as well, and it is essential to establish a difference between these two.
