Delivery Models in Healthcare have always been an essential tool in the field of medicine. With it, studies and practical approaches dedicated towards the betterment of healthcare are focused, not only on the improvement of theoretical and technical applications of medicine but also towards the betterment of society as a whole. Accordingly, several of these models have proven to be effective in providing a holistic approach to addressing the different issues that affect society. In this article, the author would focus on the Out-of-Hospital Model (OH Model). Despite being relatively new, the Out-of-Hospital Model seeks to provide a “Proactive, systematic, and intensive care for people with long-term conditions and complex health needs” (Bartlett et al., 2017). To clearly understand this, the succeeding sections of this paper would focus on the analysis of OH Model, relative to the triple aim of new healthcare delivery. All in all, the author believes that by looking at how these models fair relative to the triple aim of modern healthcare, further improvements could then be proposed.
The Triple Aim for Healthcare Model
The Triple Aim for healthcare provides that new Healthcare Delivery Models must be dedicated to (1) “Improving the patient experience of care”, (2) “improving the health of populations” and (3) “Reducing per capita costs of healthcare” (IHI.Org, 2020). As compared to previous goals set upon the provision of care, what is noticeable with the triple aim is that it focuses on both the improving the quality and experience of patients within the facilities, reducing illnesses and diseases by using proactive methods, as well as reducing costs for all stakeholders such as the State, the healthcare provider, and the patient themselves. The following sections would discuss how the OH Model was able to meet these objectives.
Improving the Patient Experience of Care
For several centuries until now, most people believe that the provision of care should primarily be focused on treating diseases and illnesses. In other words, as long as the signs and symptoms are alleviated after that, then the provider was able to fulfil this duty to its patients. Recently, however, the world has experienced a turnaround as the number of healthcare providers and continuously increased while the competition between them has also increased. This increasing market competition is the reason why most ‘private’ (and even public) providers these days have given effort towards improving ‘patient satisfaction’, which includes both the quality of the services and satisfaction of patients (Civaner, Balcioglu, & Vatansever, 2016).
In line with the OH Model, it is clear that this focus in quality is achieved by reducing queueing times and by increasing the nurse-to-patient ratio tremendously. For example, many organizations that adhere to the OH Model focuses on increasing access to facilities while also reducing queues by concentrating on a particular segment of the population (i.e., elderly) and providing all the treatments and diagnosis that they need in a single clinic, without the need to go to a larger hospital CITATION Oli15 \l 1033 (Olivero, 2015). In turn, this reduces the patients’ queue times, increases effectivity of treatments, and gives a more holistic therapy through the collaboration of different specialists that are within the same organization.
Improving the Health of Populations
Aside from improving patient experience of care, the triple aim also provides that new models must be dedicated to the improvement of the health and well-being of every individual in society. This approach differs from previous methods in the field, which are devoted mostly towards finding and providing a cure, rather than prevention. Nonetheless, the OH Model was able to offer this proactive approach by increasing out of hospital facilities that monitor and cater to a single segment of the society. For example, Bartlett, Dash, Markus, McKenna, and Streicher (2017), noted that by increasing urgent medical care for people who have mental illnesses, the number of hospitalizations could also be decreased exponentially.
