African American Men and High Blood Pressure
High blood pressure is also known as hypertension. African American men are known to have the highest rate of the condition of any group in the U.S. The rate of high blood pressure in African American men is three times the rate of the counterpart white men (Melnick, 2010). The rate is even higher due to the fact that hypertension goes untreated among the social group. Many of the African American men as investigated claimed that they did not find a reason to visit a doctor. It is clear that regular visits to the doctor and medical checkups are of great help as the condition is identified earlier and in its initial stages.
Research carried out showed that of 1,500 people with high blood pressure, a majority of men were less likely to know that they had the condition unlike women. High blood pressure develops unnoticed in young African American men. The condition is however detected later in the years after it has become a serious threat to health (Maren & Julia, 2004). The condition can be detected in its early stages through measuring of the central blood pressure. Hypertension is also referred to as the silent killer by many because it can develop without being noticed or an individual knowing it. It has severe implications to health as it is a risk factor for stroke, heart failure, kidney and heart diseases (Melnick, 2010). High blood pressure causes death and statistics show that in the year 2002 it was listed to have claimed 277,000 American lives. The blood vessels of black men are prone to dysfunction though young and healthy unlike in white men.
PEN 3 Model was developed to provide a cultural way of view to individuals interested in addressing health issues amongst Africans or rather African Americans (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2010). The model consists of three dimensions which are: cultural identity, relationships and expectations and cultural empowerment. The acronym stands for person, extended fami...
