Cultural Competency in Nursing
Cultural competence is a significant area in health care because it aids the provider to deliver a more acceptable and effective service to patients from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. Moreover, it pursues better efficiency when it comes to social services (Dyches et al., 2019).
Methods in Gathering Cultural Information from Patients
One of the popular concepts in approaching patients to acquire information is to learn, ask, avoid polarization, and, finally, empathize (Dyches et al., 2019). In contrast to this, AHRQ (2019) recommends the following: 1) The use of language assistance or interpreters. This can be in the form of a professionally hired interpreter or with the help of multilingual co-workers. Furthermore, the health provider can also learn sign language for those who cannot speak.; and 2) Hiring cultural brokers in the form of community health workers, interpreters, or anyone as long as they are trusted by most people in society (AHRQ, 2019).
