Critical Decision-Making and Organizational Performance
All healthcare facilities require their healthcare providers to learn critical decision-making skills. Health care providers should make effective decisions that involve organizational performance and quality health care services which further improves patient safety. Due to the increasingly complicated nature of the healthcare system, there is an increase in the responsibility of various healthcare professionals. Healthcare workers are expected to adhere to routines and act according to their leaders' decisions (Lunney, 2013). In accordance with medical practice, clinicians and other health workers should retrieve and analyze information to make informed decisions. This research focuses on the impact of the decision-making within the healthcare setting on a given scenario involving a health care personnel called Mike.
Consequences of a Failure to Report
Failure to report about the potential risks of the spillage may have negative consequences not only on the patient safety but that of the hospital visitors and healthcare personnel. Falls that occur as a result of spills cause severe injuries such as musculoskeletal and spinal injuries. Furthermore, depending on the fall's impact, it may also result in an individual's death. Medical attention is further required to cater to the injuries sustained, which results in additional healthcare costs. The hospital may incur further charges associated with compensating the affected individual since it is considered an act of negligence from the hospital. The other consequences for failing to report the spillage could cause a decrease in productivity if the affected individual were a health care personnel in the facility. Moreover, the patient's faith in the health facility would drastically deteriorate. According to the scenario, Mikes' failure to take action regarding the spillage led to a patient's tripping in the lobby. Furthermore, the patient developed a hip fracture leading to massive pain and eventually being admitted to the hospital. The patient expressed her disappointment at the health facility for the lack of safety measures to prevent accidents. Furthermore, Mike, the lab technician, was left in a dilemma on whether to confess to his supervisor on his failure to report the spill.
Impact of Decision
Mike's failure to report the incident has negatively impacted both the patients' safety and organizational performance. The organization is now compromised and could be perceived as incapable of ensuring its staff and patients' safety. Furthermore, Mike has also negatively impacted the patient's safety since there is a high probability of falling. Every healthcare organization prioritizes patients' well-being; hence falling could have harsh implications on both the patient and the organization. In this case, the health care facility faced the risk of legal problems for damaged arising from the patient's injuries. Moreover, the patient could sue the organization, which may attract penalties and extra financial expenses. Every healthcare organization is concerned about its image within the public domain, and legal actions against the facility could lead to a negative image for business. The falling of a patient will hence have a negative. According to the CDC, falls are one of the most costly medical conditions. Furthermore, the CDC established that the aggregate...
