To write a critical appraisal that demonstrates comprehension of the research study conducted, respond to each of the questions listed under the headings below.
Do not answer the questions with a yes or no; rather, provide a rationale or include examples or content from the study to address the questions.
CRITICAL APPRAISAL GUIDELINES: QUALITATIVE STUDY
Problem Statement
- Identify the clinical problem and research problem that led to the study. What was not known about the clinical problem that, if understood, could be used to improve health care delivery or patient outcomes? This gap in knowledge is the research problem.
- How did the author establish the significance of the study? In other words, why should the reader care about this study? Look for statements about human suffering, costs of treatment, or the number of people affected by the clinical problem.
Purpose and Research Questions
- Identify the purpose of the study. An author may clearly state the purpose of the study or may describe the purpose as the study goals, objectives, or aims.
- List research questions that the study was designed to answer. If the author does not explicitly provide the questions, attempt to infer the questions from the answers.
- Were the purpose and research questions related to the problem?
- Were qualitative methods appropriate to answer the research questions?
Literature Review
- Did the author cite quantitative and qualitative studies relevant to the focus of the study? What other types of literature did the author include?
- Are the references current? For qualitative studies, the author may have included studies older than the 5-year limit typically used for quantitative studies. Findings of older qualitative studies may be relevant to a qualitative study.
- Did the author evaluate or indicate the weaknesses of the available studies?
- Did the literature review include adequate information to build a logical argument?
Conceptual / Theoretical Framework
- Did the author identify a specific perspective from which the study was developed? If so, what was it?
- When a researcher uses the grounded theory method of qualitative inquiry, the researcher may develop a framework or diagram as part of the findings of the study. Was a framework developed from the study findings?

Article title
Melinda Smith, M.A., Lawrence Robinson, Greg Boose, and Robert Segal, M.A. (2013). Symptoms, Treatment & Help for Common Sleep Disorders, Journal of Sleeping Disorders and Sleeping Problems, 5-50
Problem statement
Studies have documented that most people experienced sleeping problems at one time or another. Evidence has also shown that an active lifestyle is very important as one grows old. Regular exercise helps in boosting energy, managing pain and illness symptoms, and maintaining independence. Lack of public knowledge on the consequences of lack physical exercises and lack of sleep resulted in this research study. Exercise is known to reverse some aging symptoms and boost urge to sleep. In addition, exercise is good for one’s mind, memory and mood as it is for body. Therefore, such physical exercise would improve the health of individuals suffering from sleeping disorder. This study is significant in that sleeping is an important element of human health and whether a person is healthy generally or managing illness well, one still needs to get exercise for good health, boost fitness and improve confidence.
Sleep can be used as a barometer of one’s health. In most cases, people who are in good health tend to have a good sleep, while those suffering from repeated sleeping disorders and sleeping problems may have underlying mental or medical health problem, minor or serious. Sleeping well is crucial to people’s physical health and emotional well being. However, even minimal loss of sleep may take a toll on someone’s energy, mood, efficiency, and ability to address stress. Ignoring sleep disorders and problems can lead to poor health. Physical exercise is significant for the aging populations. Many old people feel demoralized by fitness barriers like concerns of falls or injury and chronic health conditions. Ongoing disability and health may prevent one from getting active; however, consistent physical exercise is important to the body. It alleviates aging symptoms and minimizes risk of sleeping disorder.
Purpose and Research question
The study was solely conducted to address the causes and effects of sleeping disorders on human health. Insufficient or lack of sleep may have a negative impact on emotional balance, energy, and health. Several studies have been conduct to teach people about common symptoms of sleeping disorders and what one can do to help in the situation. The research questions of this study include:
Does sleeping problem affect health?
Does physical exercise reduce risk of sleeping disorder?
From the research findings, the purpose and research questions were related to the problem stated by the authors. The qualitative methods used were also appropriate to answer the research questions.
Literature Review
Evidence has it that most of us experienced sleeping problems at one time or another. This is particularly normal and not temporary, and results from stress and other external factors. However, when sleeping problems become a regular occurrence and cause interference with daily life, then a sleep disorder may be diagnosed. Sleeping problems cause more than sleepiness. Evidence also has it that lack of sleep may have a negative impact on emotional balance, energy, and health...
