Community Teaching
Community teaching is a crucial process that every nurse adequately considers. It involves the successful empowerment of a specific community on health matters and makes them live a healthy lifestyle (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2019). The teaching programs also allow health experts to interact with the community and learn specific challenges that they experience. Different teaching methods exist for community engagement. However, a healthcare expert must focus on the style that positively benefits the community and reduces healthcare concerns (Eustace & Boesch, 2018). The teaching programs must create awareness and enhance community interaction for adequate health. The main aim of community teaching is to promote health literacy and action plans that would positively benefit the members. It must consider basic healthcare information and an epidemiological topic that enable the community's healthcare. Community teaching can focus on different methods of primary health promotion such as reducing sugar levels, active exercising, or mentally related issues. The paper addresses a community teaching activity on stress management.
Teaching Plan Summary
I conducted a community teaching in Healing Home and Residential Services, a facility located in Virginia. The targeted population was the adults in the community since they are the most prone population to stress. The main topic was stress management since the community encountered stress as the major problem. Stress and depression are also significant problems in a healing home, and I had the opportunity to impact the community positively. I adequately exhausted the topic and focused on relevant aspects such as signs, stress management resources, therapies, and treatment plans. The healing goals were also based on healthy people 2030, which focuses on improving mental health and eliminating depression in society (Griffith, 2021). Therefore, I had an opportunity to embrace my skills and improve the community's mental health.
I began my teaching process with a formal introduction and defined my qualifications in mental health improvement. However, to positively interact with the participants, I initiated an energy-getter exercise to allow them to feel secure and part of the teaching process. After engaging the participants, I defined the key objective of the teaching program to prepare them psychologically in one strategic direction. Defining the objectives of a community teaching program is essential since it allows the participants to move in one direction with minimal distractions. The primary objectives for community teaching included identifying signs of stress, managing stress, its benefits to healthy healing, and understanding its treatment options and resources needed for its management.
After defining the objectives, I assessed the participants to determine their knowledge about stress management and its importance in healing processes. The assessment was vital since it allowed me to understand how to direct my teaching process. For instance, I tried to analyze the common stress that the community experiences and the sources of such stress. I provided reliable data on the prevalence of stress in the community to make the participants understand the necessity of stress management. The main intention was to make them active throughout the process.
I described stress as a critical physiological element that jeopardizes an individual mental status and reduces their healing ability. I also use different approaches and examples to show the effect of stress on normal human life and specific criteria for managing it. I had the opportunity to identify each stressor and correlate it to a particular management strategy. For instance, I ensured the participants were quiet and used a pen to cause noise to show them how stress disturbs the peace. I also showed the participants effective approaches to curbing stress, such as brain engagement, exercising, and therapies. Therefore, I used all the key elements of community health teaching, such as kinesthetic approaches, audios, and visual approaches to ensure that the participants were satisfied with the process and focused on high mental stability. I also formally completed my presentation by showing the participants a video on the importance of stress management and its efficiency in enhancing healing and healthy life.
Epidemiological Rationale
Stress management is an effective topic due to its benefits in promoting healing and community health. The topic is also relevant due to Virginia's increasing rate of stress and poor mental health. Therefore, it is an opportunity to reduce the rate and restore community health. According to America psychological Association (APA), stress is a common mental issue in society since it affects different populations in healing homes and 29% of teens (Schein et al., 2...
