A vein is a blood vessel that carries deoxygenated blood from the blood capillaries to the heart. Veins carry deoxygenated blood through the body, and they have internal vales, unlike arteries. The vein walls are thinner and more superficial (Marieb& Smith, 2016). An example of a vein is the jugular. Another example is the pulmonary veins that carry oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart's left atrium. Veins tend to contain valves to prevent the backflow of blood towards the capillaries. An artery is a blood vessel through which oxygenated blood flows from the heart to the capillaries in the body. Arteries are thicker, stronger, and have a more flexible muscle layer. An example of arteries is the aorta. Arteries have an endothelial lining that does not contract when there is constriction and the endothelium folds.
Arteries carry oxygenated blood away from the heart they prepare red while veins carry deoxygenated blood towards the heart and veins appear blue. Thus, there are high oxygen levels and low carbon dioxide in arterial blood. The wall of arteries has three layers and is thicker than the veins and veins have the thin elastic muscle layer (Marieb & Smith, 2016). The arterial walls have three layers and are thicker than have the thin elastic muscle layers. For arteries the thickest layer is the tunica media (middle layer), while for veins the thickest layers is the Tunica adventitia.
