Background
Workplace violence is one of the clinical problems that have resulted in a reduction in the quality of healthcare accorded to patients. Bullied nurses end up performing incorrect procedures to patients as well as causing other medication errors (Arnetz, Sudan, Fitzpatrick, Cotten, Jodoin, Chang & Arnetz, 2018). This puts the patient's life at risk and in other cases, worsens the patient's condition. Nurses require a conducive work environment for them to be able to provide the best quality healthcare to patients. Hospitals have been experiencing an inconducive work environment as a result of violence. This occurs in the case whereby the senior nurses pressure the novice nurses into performing medical procedures without guidance. Some also result in novice nurses taking on extra shifts on behalf of senior nurses. The overload of work results in fatigue, hence making it difficult for novice nurses to effectively take care of patients (Arnetz, Sudan, Fitzpatrick, Cotten, Jodoin, Chang & Arnetz, 2018). In addition, other healthcare professionals also face workplace violence in the different departments of the hospitals.
Problem Statement
Hospitals have been experienced numerous medication errors which result from an inconducive work environment. This is common in the case of novice nurses, whereby they are forced into performing procedures that they should be performing under the supervision of a senior nurse. As a result, they end up working under pressure and overloaded hence making it difficult for them to provide quality healthcare to the patients. As well, violence has also been experienced among other workers, such as sexual assaults. Health workers require a conducive work environment for them to be able to accord the best quality healthcare to their patients. This has been made a difficult task in some hospitals whereby violence is the order of the day. Workplace violence results in mental and physical trauma among the involved nurses. The impact is not only felt by the affected nurses but also by the patients and the entire organization. Some nurses have been reported to change their workplaces as a result of such violence. In addition, the violence does not only occur from the managers to the subordinates but also occurs horizontally between nurses. If these issues are not addressed effectively, the quality of healthcare provided to the patients will reduce. Therefore, an evidence-based solution needs to be implemented to ensure that the nurses have a conducive work environment whereby they can attend to patients effectively.
Purpose of The Change Proposal
The purpose of this change proposal would be the eradication of medication errors which, would, in turn, result in an improvement in the quality of healthcare accorded to patients. The medication errors will be reduced through the creation of a conducive work environment, which is free from violence (Ulrich, Gillespie, Boesch, Bateman & Grubb, 2017). Once this evidence-based practice has been implemented, the hospitals will be a place for hope and healing to the patients. The elimination or reduction of the workplace violence would provide the novice nurses with ample time to learn some of the necessary procedures and in turn, be able to perform them without the supervision of a senior nurse (Sauer & McCoy, 2017). This would reduce the workload of senior nurses hence making it easy for them to effectively attend to all the patients. The eradication of such violence would also lead to the elimination of the related medication errors.
PICOT
Does reducing workplace violence towards novice nurses by other healthcare professionals Increase the quality of healthcare accorded to patients?
Literature Search Strategy Employed
Information was obtained from various sources in regard to workplace violence and the impact that it has brought in hospitals. The sources included job satisfaction surveys, literature reviews, and systematic reviews. All the obtained information was compared to come up with evidence of how hospital workers are facing violence and the various strategies that can be employed to eradicate such violence.
Evaluation of The Literature
A lot of research has been made on the issue of workplace violence. Despite the many strategies that have been implemented by different hospitals to ensure a conducive work environment for their medical practitioners, there are still cases of violence being reported. Hospitals need to invest a lot towards the creation of a conducive work environment. This could cut some of the costs associated with work terminations and medication errors cause by the bullied medical practitioners. The wellbeing of the patients and the entire organization is a pr...
