Certification is one of the most crucial aspects of advancing one’s career as a nurse for it helps deepen the knowledge and exposure of nurses towards one specific field. While there are many types of certifications that a nurse in the United States could take, I chose the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) certification over others, such as ACRN, CPN, and AOCN, among others CITATION httnd \l 1033 (NurseJournal.org, n.d.). The main reason as why I prioritized AANP first is the environment that an AANP certification in our home state (Texas) as compared to other states nearby. In relation to others, Texas laws in NP are much more restrictive and require the supervision of more specialized nurses CITATION AANnd \l 1033 (AANP.org, n.d.). Career wise, this entails better opportunities for nurses who undergo AANP since they are most likely to be in an administrative position and other practices, while guiding those who do not have any specialized NP certifications. Aside from this, another reason why I wanted to take the AANP is practicality and the relatively easier way of renewal as compared to other types of certifications. As according to AllNurses.com (n.d.), the AANP only requires 75 CMEs every five years for renewal, which is lower as compared to 150 CMEs being required by the ANCC. Nonetheless, this does not mean that the AANP exam is easier for it still depends on the context and the types of questions that would be used.
