Tobacco use is one of the leading risk factors for various chronic diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and cancers. The smoking cigarette has grown to be a major concern in the health profession as a result of the disease-causing carcinogenic, which accounts for almost 30 percent of cancer deaths. Its deaths rarely make headlines, yet tobacco kills one person every six seconds (Mapatra et al., 2015). Tobacco use is not only detrimental to human health but also, it affects the productivity of its consumers, increases the burden of healthcare and poverty in families of consumers, outside the health ramifications and negative impacts on society, smoking tobacco is also an environmental hazard. In order to mitigate this, there is supposed a consistent and aggressive education on tobacco use and its adverse effects on human health, to reduce the number of tobacco-related deaths. Tobacco smoking is one of the greatest causes of mortality in the world, responsible for over 5 million deaths per annum (Golechha, 2016). As a health practitioner, health promotion is important, and this is achieved through health education (Waisbord, 2018).
Tobacco-related premature deaths are highly preventable from consistent education and campaigns by health professionals. Statistics from the World Health Organization triggered previous public education on tobacco use, in its fourth sitting recognized that globally, the use of tobacco is responsible for over two million premature deaths, annually, and it threw its weight behind aggressive efforts in cutting down consumption and its production (Ramseiur & Suvan, 2016). Health professionals, therefore, have a role to play in creating awareness on tobacco consumption's impact on individual consumers, the community and social life.
Considering tobacco smoking starts at adolescent, and early childhood, adolescents, these education programs should majorly focus on adolescents. This population-level effectiveness will have a specific target group that, which will have a specifically designed targeted message. It is in this generation that tobacco smoking has grown even more popular among adolescents as a result of its incorporation in the popular culture, which has led to a significant rise in the use of e-cigarettes. Comprehensive and sustained strategies on health education on tobacco use among adolescents are needed (Arrazola et al., 2015). It is worthy to note that the content of the education material matters a lot regarding how effective the transmission of its message will be. Content is important because over the years large graphic health warnings on all tobacco packages have failed to reduce its consumption (WHO, 2017).
