There are no known causes for fibrocystic breast. However, there is little evidence that links reproductive hormones more so estrogen to the condition. The condition is familiar with a more significant percentage of women. It becomes of medical significance when the breast becomes painful and lumps develop. The severity of fibrocystic breast and need to seek medical intervention depends on the presenting signs and symptoms.
Signs and Symptoms of fibrocystic breast
One of the symptoms of fibrocystic is the tenderness of the breast and generalized pain. Secondly, Fluctuating breast lump sizes for the different menstrual cycle. There is also thickening of and blending of areas surrounding the breast tissues. Some of the patients experience dripping dark brown or green discharge from the nipples that flow freely. Lastly, the increase in lumpiness or breast pain as from the middle of the ovulation cycle to the commencement of the menstrual period begins.
Diagnosis
Clinical examination of the breast and evaluation of the symptoms forms the premise of making a diagnosis. Both the breasts are felt and checked for abnormalities and lumps. If on palpation the Fibrocystic Breast lumps are movable, then there is a confirmation of the condition (Wirfs, 2019). If the breast lumps are firm, then other diagnostic investigations such as mammogram and ultrasound should be considered.
