Interviewing the patient is perhaps one of the most important skills in the field of healthcare. It allows the practitioner to be able to assess the patient’s condition, as well as strategically provide develop a plan to address his problems. Accordingly, any practitioner must be able to be dynamic towards the different situation of each patient. While there are those who prefer a straightforward interaction, there are also those that require a an alternative approach to build one’s trust. In this case, the patient being interviewed is a patient is a 40-year old Black adult, without health insurance, who has just migrated from Africa. Based from this, it is apparent that the practitioner must be considerate of this own circumstances, while also ensuring that the best care possible is given to him. Particularly, the succeeding sections provide the specifics of the interview guidelines.
In order to ensure that the interview method for this case would lead elicit all the needed information in an efficient and effective manner, the author believes that it is important to exhibit cultural sensitivity and utilize effective non-verbal techniques during the interview. In one study conducted by Hillen, et al. (2018), the authors were able to found out that reducing the amount of eye contact, maintaining physical distance, and utilizing appropriate body orientations could increase the level of trust between the immigrant patient and the physician. This is especially because immigrants who might be hindered by some cultural and verbal barriers, rely on non-verbal cues in order to build trust between one another.
