Hence cultural empowerment touches on all the aspects highlighted above which influence various cultural aspects of the African American men with hypertension. Cultural empowerment is undoubtedly the most effective intervention to address the stigma created by hypertension among the African American men which may enable them to achieve the best possible available healthcare (Maren & Julia, 2004). Cultural empowerment among African Americans with hypertension specifically involves addressing how each of the three factors of the PEN-3 model applies to the selected group. PEN-3 Model was developed to provide a cultural way of view to individuals interested in addressing health issues amongst African Americans (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2010). The PEN-3 model consists of three main factors such as positive, existential, and negative. Positive Cultural empowerment has being positively imparting on health of the hypertensive African Americans. At individual level there have been links that racism leads low self esteem and stress, the ultimate result is a negative affect on the blood pressure levels (Lukoschek, 2003).
