Throughout the course, a wide range of skills and knowledge has been gained taking into consideration that various health issues have been combined with practical clinical experiences. During the course, I got the opportunity of working in the cardiology unit, neurology unit, ortho-surgical unit, and oncology unit. Apart from learning about the specific health issues that are applicable in each of these units, I managed to discover how inter-professional collaboration enhances the delivery of quality health care in these clinical systems. Furthermore, leadership practices are integrated into these clinical practices to improve health outcomes of the patients.
Neurology Unit
In the neurology unit, the disorders that are treated include those that affect the spinal cord, brain and the nerves. These diseases include stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s diseases, Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, language and speech disorders, spinal cord disorders, and other related diseases (Wijdicks, Menon & Smith, 2015). From a personal perspective, the neurology unit has managed to bring together healthcare professionals who specialize in these diseases as well as scholars and other research groups. This has enhanced new practice approaches where modern technologies are used in the diagnosis of patients who suffer from acute and chronic neurological problems. This is because conditions such as stroke and epilepsy are highly complicated and they need intra-professional collaboration and innovative clinical systems to improve patient outcomes.
Evidence indicates that most complications that are treated in this unit usually affect the elderly population and therefore critical care in required to manage their health concerns. This indicates that there are health disparities in terms of demographic groups affected by these diseases. Leadership plays an instrumental role in the way services are delivered in this unit. For instance, the chief nurse is tasked with the duty of ensuring that ethical concerns are taken care of in service delivery. This is because nurses in this unit care for patients suffering from brain tumors or with a traumatic head injury after a serious accident (Wijdicks, Menon & Smith, 2015). This implies that a nurse should be able to show compassion and maintain sensitivity since such patients are not able to focus mentally or function normally without assistance. The health policy requires all nurses to maintain the code of conduct that pertains to the nursing profession.
Cardiology Unit
In the cardiology unit, health care professionals are tasked with the role of caring for patients with health complications, starting from diagnosis to assessment to intervention. New practice approaches include the development of innovative technologies and applications. For instance, ground breaking approaches in the cardiology imaging unit led to the development of new radiofrequency ablation for the management of rhythm (McConnell, et al., 2013). Intra-professional collaboration with other clinical scientists has also led to the development of non-invasive services. Delivery of care is done by qualified acute care nurse practitioners. Patients are informed about their condition and they give their consent before the delivery of care in order to maintain ethical considerations.
