In your opinion, what are the motivations to apply Augmented Reality (AR) in the field of healthcare? Provide examples from the article as well as other relevant sources.
One motivation to apply augmented reality in healthcare is the fact that it can integrate patient data alongside the imaging. Doctors can, therefore, take proper care of their patients while also improving quality and reducing the cost of healthcare in the end. In the article, Carmigniani et al. (2010) mention display as one of the main devices for AR. Display is then divided into three and these are head-mounted displays, handheld displays, and spatial displays. The display referred to here is the head-mounted display. While wearing this display, doctors can have the patient data displayed alongside the patient’s imaging. This will help the diagnosis process and reduce instances of medical errors.
Another motivation for augmented reality is the ability to reduce or completely eliminate the idea of many screens. Through augmented reality, the displays can be shared and this can help eliminate the issue of having multiple screens during the process of collecting patient data. Healthy simulation (2019) indicates that “currently ultrasound, endoscopy, and bronchoscopy all require hospitals to buy costly systems, each with a separate display.” This can be eliminated by using augmented reality because these displays can be shared.
Another motivation is how augmented reality will help enhance surgical training. Barsom et al. (2013) note that the use of augmented reality applications “is of real interest to medical education because they blend digital elements with the physical learning environment.” Augmented reality has thus made it incredibly easy for students to be trained in an almost real environment.
