Students are expected to submit assignments by the time they are due. Assignments submitted after the due date and time will receive a deduction of 10% of the total points possible for that assignment for each day the assignment is late. Assignments will be accepted, with penalty as described, up to a maximum of three days late, after which point a zero will be recorded for the assignment.
In the event of a situation that prevents timely submission of an assignment, students may petition their instructor for a waiver of the late submission grade reduction. The instructor will review the student's rationale for the request and make a determination based on the merits of the student's appeal. Advanced Practice Nursing (APN) Professional Development Plan
APN governs all nursing professionals with different expertise, including nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, anesthetists, and midwives. Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) have a significant role in the community, for they act as primary health providers. The latter is responsible for giving primary care and preventive health services to a particular area. Moreover, they are dependable in the diagnosis of diseases, advisory on public health issues, and the management of chronic communicable and non-communicable diseases CITATION Amend2 \l 1033 (American Nurses Association, n.d.).
To earn knowledge concerning the areas mentioned, APRNs are required to undergo continuing education to remain updated on the technological and methodological medical approaches (Hamric, Hanson, Tracy, & O'Grady, 2013).
This paper discusses the scope of the APN practice, the requirements for becoming an APRN, the regulatory board, and the skills and knowledge necessary to provide high-quality patient care.
APN Scope of Practice
The scope of practice of the APRNs varies on their nursing specialty. Generally, the nursing specialties include the certified nurse practitioner (CNP), clinical nurse specialist (CNS), certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), and certified nurse-midwife (CNM) (Fraser & Melillo, 2018).
CNPs supports health promotion and education, disease prevention, and the diagnosis and treatment of acute or chronic illnesses. Moreover, they are responsible for providing primary and continuing inclusive care to the patients included in the family practice, geriatrics, pediatrics, internal medicine, and women’s health. The CNSs are mainly assigned to research and academics. Moreover, they can also provide primary care to the community. CRNAs work in coordination with the surgical team. They can offer the same services as that of physician-anesthesiologists. However, the scope of their practice is more restricted. Lastly, the CNMs are mostly concerned about the reproductive health of women CITATION NCLnd \l 1033 (NCLEX, n.d.).
Nurse Practice Act and the Scope of Practice
The practice of APRNs is regulated in each state by its Nurse Practice Act. It guarantees that all the registered nurses have excellent knowledge and skills to promote competence and high-quality care for the patients. Generally, the Nurse Practice Act in all states confers to the following tasks: defining APN; designing and outlining the authority, power, and structure of the state Board of Nursing (BON); formulation of the standards for educational didactics and the criteria and scope of the practice of nursing; enumerating the kinds of titles and licenses and the methods for the protection of these; and specifying the grounds for disciplinary actions and the definitions of the types of violations CITATION Grand \l 1033 (GraduateNursingEdu.org, n.d.)
Requirements in the State of Georgia
Education
The education requirements vary in the nursing specialty. A candidate must obtain the graduate program in any certified school inside or outside the state. However, if the degree shall be taken outside the country, the application must be deemed equivalent to a BON-approved program CITATION Grand \l 1033 (GraduateNursingEdu.org, n.d.).
The Georgia BON grants APN programs to any member of the Technical College System of Georgia or any part of the University System of Georgia. The college must be qualified by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Nursing programs accomplished outside of Georgia must be duly accredited by any accreditation agency identified by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) CITATION Grand \l 1033 (GraduateNursingEdu.org, n.d.).
The candidate must complete the following course requirements/subject units: advanced pathophysiology, advanced health assessment, and advanced pharmacology. Moreover, CNSs assigned in psychiatric health shall complete not less than two graduate courses in mental health nursing and guided practice for each of the chosen graduate courses CITATION Grand \l 1033 (GraduateNursingEdu.org, n.d.).
CRNAs are required to take the following course requirements: pre-anesthetic preparation and assessment; anesthesia induction, maintenance, and emergence; perianesthetic and clinical support functions; and postanesthesia care CITATION Grand \l 1033 (GraduateNursingEdu.org, n.d.).
Licensure
The following are the general requirements to apply for the licensure examination for APRN in the state of Georgia: 1) Graduation certificate from an APN education program that shall be dated not more than four years old from the time of application.; 2) At least five hundred hours of APRN experience within four years before the use.
