 Research Paper Guidelines

1) Research your topic by finding an empirical journal article on the library’s database. Go to the ASA home page, click on student services, choose library from the drop down menu, follow the instructions to sign into the library, choose databases and ebooks, choose health disciplines, choose Ebsco, search by typing key words of your chosen topic.  You are NOT to use websites! You may use Google Scholar providing you are not prompted to pay for the journal article. The electronic library database is comprised of published journals in myriad fields of study. Your article must be approved by your professor in class prior to reading the article and writing your paper. If you are not sure how to differentiate a website from an empirical journal article, please come to me and I will personally walk you through the steps.

Accessing the Electronic Library Database
When you begin to think about writing, the first thing one must do is think about a topic. Oftentimes, as a student, a topic or series of topics will be assigned. Research is the second step in the writing processes. When researching a chosen topic, it is imperative that the sources be accurate and credible. Today, almost all libraries are equipped with electronic databases. What this means is that the actual books and journals still exist, but the information is now uploaded into an electronic database. This saves time, space and resources. When you access the database, the researcher must input the information it is seeking. This processes replaces the librarian or reference desk individual that would walk the researcher to the exact isle where the book and or journal information would be.
Below are the steps to successfully maneuvering the electronic library:
To find journals:
Click on find articles
Choose the database Ebsco

Search your topic by typing in your topic and any other key words that may be related to what your ideas are. For example, if you wanted to research depression, you would type in depression. Underneath that first line there are two lines that say and, type in more specific details about depression that you want to know. If I wanted to research depression in young females, I might try depression, females and adolescents.
A list of titles and parts of abstracts will pop up. Make sure you can click onto the full PDF full text of the article.

Research Project Guidelines:
Your research paper must be a type- written paper. Please choose a topic from the list provided. You must have at least one supporting article to back up your research and ideas. Please use Ebscot to find your empirical journal article. Writing a Paper in APA Style Formatting:
When referencing your work, please cite according to APA style, as this is the universal norm. Your paper must be three (3) pages. Please type your paper in Times New Roman, 12-point font, double spaced on standardized paper (8.5 x 11”) with 1” margins on all sides. Beginning on the title page and throughput your APA document, a page header or footer are required which must possess your name and the title of your paper in the same line. Page numbers are required beginning with the title page and reference page. It is at your discretion to use either a title page or a heading in the far left corner of the first page of your paper, but remember that a title page does not count as a page of written work, although it counts as page one. All papers must have a reference page. The reference page is not part of your three page written work, and it must be on its own page with the heading: references, work cited or bibliography. The reference page is the last page of your completed work

American Psychological Association (APA) In-Text and Reference Citation Guidelines

The American Psychological Association (APA) is the universal norm to cite sources within organic and social sciences, business, law, and history, etc. Any source you read and use as supporting evidence to your research paper must be documented.

In-Text Citations:
When writing your paper, it is important to document your sources throughout your work by citing the author and date of the work researched. This validates your work factually and permits the reader to identify your sources and locate the full documentation in the reference page attached to the back of your paper. If you take words, phrases, or sentences exactly as they appear in a source, you must enclose those words in quotation marks (“ “) and cite the author, and year of publication. If your quotation has less than 40 words, incorporate them into the body of the text.
Example:
Freud saw dreams, like the symptom, as a historical record and the cure is the therapeutic processes of psychoanalysis. He realized individual mental life as shared experience with others; individual yet social, ‘building a bridge of all three phenomena the soul or self, family and society’ (Lothane, 2006).
Paraphrasing:

Rephrasing or rewriting the thoughts and ideas of another in your own words is called paraphrasing. You must give credit to the individual(s) whose ideas you are rewriting. This does not require quotation marks. Instead, rewrite and rephrase the work which will be a combination of your work and the authors and at the end of the paragraph provide the author’s last name and year of publication. Below are examples of myriad authors.
Examples:
One Work by One Author:
When paraphrasing one author, provide the author’s last name and the publication year. Note that the author’s name and year are separated by a comma.
(Karsten, 2008).

Two Authors:
When citing two authors, use both authors’ names separated by a comma and when used inside parentheses.
(Johnson and Klein, 2010).
Multiple Authors:
When citing three, four, or five authors, cite only the last name of the first author followed by the term et al. which is Latin meaning including all.
(Bowen et al., 2009).
References:
References appear at the end of your paper on a new page and may be labeled as References, Work Cited or Bibliography. References are arranged, alphabetically by the author’s last name of each article. Use only initials for first and middle names. Capitalize only the first word of the title and the subtitle and any proper nouns. Double space between each line. Begin typing your citation at the left-hand margin, and indent succeeding lines of each entry 5 spaces from the left margin. Italics should be used for titles of journals.Journal article:
Author(s) of article (can be found on the first page of the article) Year of publication(is almost always included on the front cover of the journal, or on the journal's title page. Often the publication year can also be found on the first page of each article, at the top of each page, or on the journal's spine) Title of article(is printed on the first page of the article) Title of journal(is indicated on the journal's front cover or title page. Sometimes it will also be printed at the top of each page and on the journal's spine) Volume number(is usually noted on the front cover or title page of the journal) Issue number(is used only if the journal counts each issue individually; the issue number can usually be found either on the front cover or title page. Sometimes the issue number is also found on the first page of the article) Pages of article (are sometimes specified as a range in the table of contents; otherwise, make a note of the first and last page numbers of the actual article)
Example:
Author, A. A. (1996). Title of journal article. Title of journal, volume number: first page-last
Page.
Author, A. A., & Author, B. B. (1996). Title of journal article: Subtitle of journal article. Title of journal, volume number: first page-last page.
Author, A. A., Author, B. B., & Author, C. C. (1996). Title of journal article. Title of journal: Subtitle of journal, volume number (issue number): first page-last page.
Book:
When referencing a book list the authors, year of publication, the title of book in italics, city, publishing company.Example:
Author, A.A. & Author, A.A. (year of publication). Title of book. City: Publishing company.
