Phenytoin is a class IB antidysrhythmic marketed as Phenytek, Dilantin, and Dilantin 125. Also known as an antiepileptic or anticonvulsant drug, Phenytoin is used in the prevention and control of seizures (Sruthi, 2021). The drug’s primary mechanism of action involves the reduction in the spread of seizures in the brain, but may also help in the treatment of some forms of irregular heartbeats. The latter mode of action of the drug makes it an antidysrhythmic or antiarrhythmic agent. In general, antiarrhythmic drugs act by modifying Na+, K+, and Ca2+ channel functions as well as other intracellular mechanisms controlled through adrenergic activities (Lei et al., 2018). Phenytoin particularly works as a sodium channel blocker in the cardiac muscles by causing slow conduction of electrical impulses in the Purkinje fibers and ventricular muscles (Sruthi, 2021). The most common side effects to monitor with phenytoin prescription include fatigue, drowsiness, loss of coordination or balance, headache, irritability, nervousness, and irritability.
