How would you explain the analysis of variance (ANOVA), assuming that your audience has not had a statistics class before?
The analysis of variance (ANOVA) is a technique that test the differences of the population means based on the results of two or more groups (Investopedia, 2016). The measure is usually used in matching pairs, where the probabilities are also calculated to determine whether the variations are significant different. The t-test is closely related to ANOVA and is also a technique to evaluate the means of two groups, and is appropriate when there are two groups, while the ANOVA test examines the differences in the population means (De Muth, 2014).
ANOVA allows one to test the soundness of the propositions, and calculating the differences of the samples (groups) is necessary (Investopedia, 2016). Comparing the sample differences then helps to determine whether they are statistically different while considering the sampling error. ANOVA can be the one-way ANOVA, and the two-way ANOVA. The one-way ANOVA is used when using one factor to compare the variations in the groups (Investopedia, 2016). The two- way ANOVA is used to compare two explanatory factors.
An example when the ANOVA technique is useful is a case where formal and informal recruitment affects the rates of employee turnover. To avoid errors the sample size of the two groups are equal. The initial proportion is tested to determine if there are significant differences among the population means, with fluctuation in sample means being attributed to chance variability. When using ANOVA to determine the relationship among variables, the sum of squares represents the total variations that depend on the predicted or investigated factors (De Muth, 2014). One of the main benefits ANOVA is that it is a robust approach that ...
