The specialty of health administration evolves in a different direction from advanced practice nursing (APN). Health administration deals with issues of leadership, management, and administration of various public health systems, hospital networks, and health care systems (Dotson & Nuru-Jeter, 2012). Health administrators are often high-level executives that are responsible for overseeing keys duties that ensure medical institutions run smoothly. Healthcare administration requires leadership and managing the healthcare systems through strategizing of patient care needs and medical services. Administrators may take different scopes of responsibilities ranging from a single clinical setting to an entire healthcare system. In many instances, they work closely with medical professionals to enhance patients care (Dotson & Nuru-Jeter, 2012).
The key difference between health administrators and advanced practice nursing is their responsibilities. While advanced practice nursing is involved with being at the forefront of providing preventive patient care, health administration is about controlling and managing the entire facility. Health administrators are evolving in learning how to manage and control health care facilities through modern leadership techniques (Dotson & Nuru-Jeter, 2012). These includes moving from the authoritarian form of leadership to a more subtle democratic or autocratic leadership systems. Basically, healthcare administrators are evolving in ensuring that they involve subordinates such as departmental managers or medical professionals in decision making. The idea is to have inclusive form of decision-making as opposed to the traditional dictatorial form of leadership. Leadership is evolving everywhere including in healthcare and so various forms of leadership styles such as transformational and transformational are being embraced (Dotson & Nuru-Jeter, 2012).
