Adolescent pregnancy has been considered to be a major health problem worldwide. Research over time has shown that early childbearing has negative effects on maternal health and that of a newborn. One of the major issues regarding teen pregnancy is about a girl’s own body and the degree of emotional and physical development during delivery (Hayward, 2011). Teen pregnancy is associated with higher rates of mortality for the child and mother. It has been a contributing factor to the low birth weight of a newborn and the mother developing complications during delivery. Some of the complications during and after labor for a teen include genital tract infections; chronic inflammation; and a higher risk of contracting anemia compared to an adult pregnant woman. It has also been noted that due to their immature pelvic bones, teens have a higher risk of having complications during delivery.
