An Advanced Diploma in Mental Health (ADMH) practice in the postpartum unit is crucial for ensuring that new mothers and babies are well taken care of after birth. The primary roles and responsibilities of postpartum nurses include monitoring and assessing the health condition of the mother and baby after birth. They check the vital signs of the newborn baby. Postpartum nurses facilitate the healing and recovery of new mothers (RegisteredNursing.org, n.d.). They educate new mothers and their families to take care of the babies and transition smoothly. If the mother undergoes a caesarian during birth, postpartum nurses are responsible for giving them medications, such as antibiotics (Buek, Cortez, & Mandell, 2021). They remove catheters and discharge mothers when they get ready or are permitted to go home.
Description of Assessment Tools in Postpartum Unit
The primary assessment tools relative to the postpartum unit are the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Screen (EPDS) and the Postpartum Functional Assessment Questionnaire (PFAQ). The EPDS focuses on anxiety, suicidal thoughts, and depressive symptoms (Postpartum Support International, n.d.). The most significant benefit of the EPDS is that it is self-administered, easy to complete, and translated into numerous languages. The PFAQ incorporates the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM). In addition, it uses a scale to determine the severity of pain.
