Week 3 | Part 3: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics
I have analyzed the relationship between academic integrity and writing, as well as the relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics. I have also identified strategies I intend to pursue to maintain integrity and ethics of my academic work while a student of the MSN program, as well as my professional work as a nurse throughout my career. The results of these efforts are shared below.
Directions: In the space below craft your analysis/writing sample, including Part 1 (The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity) and Part 2 (Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work).

Part 1: Writing Sample: The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity

In the space below write a 2- 3-paragraph analysis that includes the following:

An explanation for the relationship between academic integrity and writing
Academic writing requires the scholar to consume others' work and come up with something new and original out of it. A scholar needs to crystallize existing literature and form new original ideas out of it. Therefore, the very nature of academic writing is to build on what others have come up with. Because it is inevitable to use other scholars' ideas, work, and words, you must acknowledge them in your writing. Acknowledging the work of other scholars is maintaining academic integrity. Any academic work that lacks academic integrity is considered plagiarized, which attracts various penalties. In some cases, if a professional is found to have committed an academic crime, he/she can lose his/her accreditation and or license. All academic institutions have policies designed to ensure that all students/scholars observe academic writing rules and produce original ideas without plagiarizing.
An explanation for the relationship between professional practices and scholarly ethics
Professional practice is the use of one’s knowledge in a particular profession for which he/she is trained and was tutored. Acquiring knowledge for the specific profession necessitates the individual to undergo an educational program created and regulated by a professional body. The professional's training requires taking various research activities presented for evaluation to determine their theoretical understanding of the necessary knowledge to work in the profession. In most institutions that offer professional courses, they administer examinations and require the students to conduct scientific research to develop new original ideas. Because of the complexity and effort to develop these new original ideas, some students often take shortcuts by plagiarizing their work to earn better grades/marks and be accredited for that profession. Plagiarism is the use of another person's ideas or expressions in your writing without acknowledging the source CITATION Dav08 \l 1033 (Nimmer, 2008). Scholarly ethics guide the scholar through these processes, which require them to come up with new original ideas. Scholarly ethics set out the principles to be followed for the scholar to ensure that he/she produces quality work while observing all academic writing rules. Observance of scholarly ethics helps to produce competent professionals in their respective fields.
Explain how Grammarly, Safe Assign, and paraphrasing contributes to academic integrity.
There are some products and skills that can help students and scholars to improve their products. First is the skill of paraphrasing. Paraphrasing is expressing the meaning of a concept using different words to achieve clarity. Students are encouraged to paraphrase information from other sources in their work. However, they must always acknowledge the source of information. Thus, in paraphrasing, the student/scholar synthesizes the information and writes it in his/her own words in their work. Paraphrasing is an essential skill in academic writing. Safessign and Grammarly are tools developed to improve the work of the student/scholar. They are software products that are designed to enhance the quality of the student’s work. Grammarly helps in proofreading and editing of the work. It has features that highlight spelling mistakes, overused vocabulary, poor punctuation, tautology and wordiness, incorrect tense, etc. Premium Grammarly also has plagiarism detection features. Grammarly helps the user catch the overlooked and often undetectable grammatical mistakes and generally improve the paper's quality. Safeassign is designed to detect plagiarism. SafeAssign runs the submitted paper through its system, which detects any form of plagiarism and where it was likely extracted. If any existing work features similar content, SafeAssign flags it as plagiarism and gives it a score. Both SafeAssign and Grammarly are proprietary software accessible on a subscription basis, and some users pay to use them. Both help improve the academic integrity of the paper run through them by detecting plagiarism and grammatical mistakes.

PART 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work

ACADEMIC STRATEGY 1: Reading and Researching
The best way to ensure you hand in quality work is reading and researching extensively. Reading and researching extensively helps you as a student to have a broad knowledge, and each evaluative task becomes easier. It becomes easier because you have sufficient knowledge to answer each question correctly and sufficiently. To ensure that I do increasingly build my knowledge base, I will also subscribe to various journals and any periodical in my field. Ninety-three percent of the RNs felt that information in journals helps them in their practice, and 68% subscribed to professional nursing journals CITATION Ski89 \l 1033 (Skinner & Miller, 1989). Journals are a great way of keeping up with the development of literature in your field, and subscribing to several of them would help me build my knowledge base. By reading and researching extensively, I believe it will help me as a student to identify gaps in knowledge. Hence, I’ll not be susceptible to plagiarizing another person’s work ‘unintentionally.’ Thus, to maintain academic integrity as a student, I will have to read extensively in my field.
ACADEMIC STRATEGY 2: Time Management
The other strategies are more personal in the way I approach my MSN program. I will need to consciously ensure that I start all evaluative tasks and research objectives early to have sufficient time to research and write on them. I’ll also need to plan to avoid procrastination. Procrastination eventually leads to tight deadlines that are hard enough to deliver quality work and increase the temptation to cheat and plagiarize.
ACADEMIC RESOURCE 1: Subscription to Writing Tools
I’ll need to get a subscription to various academic writing tools such as Grammarly and SafeAssign. I will not necessarily subscribe to these two products, but any viable alternative to any of them is welcome. Grammarly will help me root out any grammatic...
