Alcohol Anonymous (AA): Mental Health Observations The Author’s Name The Institutional Affiliation Course Number and Name The Instructor Assignment Due Date Alcohol Anonymous (AA) Meeting Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) is a community-based support group that assists patients through a systematic recovery process. AA does not restrict participants by age, gender, ethnicity, or geography. AA entertains people to recover from addictions and embrace a clean lifestyle. On 7 March 2025, I attended an AA meeting in a local ballroom. This meeting had an ‘acceptance’ theme, allowing participants to embrace events leading to alcohol addiction. I received an invitation from AA to represent the community college and observe interactions, environment, and outcomes to report liaisons. My observation found that alcohol abusers should begin a lifestyle transition by accepting errors and interacting with professionals. Pathophysiology: Alcohol vs. Narcotics Abuse Alcohol and narcotics have distinct pathophysiology that influences the bodily implications of a patient. According to Subramaniyan et al. (2021), alcohol consumption influences abusers’ central nervous system through sedation and cognitive impairments. Alcohol consumers have disturbed thought processes and judgment calls that disturb the core body function. Excessive consumption leads to fatty liver, cirrhosis, memory impairments, and shifts in brain sizes. Alcoholics experience withdrawal symptoms leading to cardiovascular diseases, vulnerabilities in immune systems, and gastrointestinal problems (Subramaniyan et al., 2021). On the contrary, narcotic or drug abuses have a different pathophysiology than alcoholics. Ignaszewski (2021) explained that narcotic abuse creates opioid receptors in the central nervous system. Drug addicts experience severe pain, sedation, and euphoria, leading to chronic illnesses. The withdrawal symptoms include drowsiness, anxiety, insomnia, and kidney impairments. Long-term consumption also creates complexities in the respiratory systems, increasing substance dependency (Ignaszewski, 2021). Environmental Observation The AA meeting offered a robust, interactive, open environment to engage participants and facilitators. Three experienced facilitators representing reputed therapeutic institutions recognized for curing alcohol abuse led the meeting. Facilitators practiced empathy and emotional intelligence to comply with the ‘acceptance’ theme, allowing participants to remove perceived fear from social judgments. The facilitators maintained a focused, disciplined, problem-solving, and cheerful vibe throughout the meeting to connect better with the participants. On the contrary, participants demonstrated calmness, acceptability, and active listening attributes towards the meeting. Participants opened up about personal experiences and shared the dark sides of alcohol unlocks. Participants offered consent to embrace change towards a healthy lifestyle through profound insights. The environment became transparent and productive for the facilitators and participants, creating significant room for positive transitions. Hence, the overall setting was pleasing and encouraging for alcohol addicts to share insights and demonstrate willingness towards improvements.
