Module 2 - Case

USING TECHNOLOGY IN HEALTHCARE INFORMATION SYSTEM AND BIG DATA

Case Assignment

Technology is changing and evolving. Conduct a search of the Internet, library, or print literature to identify several new or emerging technologies for maintaining health records. Prepare a 5 page essay to explain the following questions:

Describe each technology and discuss its potential use in the management of health care information or the development of health care information systems.

What proportion of the data in the patient’s medical record is captured electronically? What information is recorded manually? Do you think the method of capture affects the quality of the information?

List three major inpatient clinical information systems and explain how technology enables these systems to deliver improved care.

Identify two outpatient clinical information systems and explain how these systems differ from inpatient clinical information systems.

Using Technology in Healthcare
Emerging technologies and their use in the management of healthcare information
Health care organizations have adopted emerging technologies to manage and maintain health records. According to a study by Bradley University (2019), almost 90% of health care facilities have the basic electronic health record (EHR) tools in their settings. While hospitals are trying to employ EHR, the health industry lags in technological advances considering other thriving industries such as retail and telecommunications (Bradley University, 2019). However, multiple technological advancements are being used in healthcare due to their explicit capabilities of transforming the industry. 3-D printing is used for various tasks like customized dental work and hearing aid (Bradley University, 2019). The technology is also useful in influencing on-demand inventory and other processes, including transplants and prosthetics. According to Bradley University (2019), virtual reality (VR) is significant by decreasing stress among patients. The action is accomplished by immersing them in relaxing surroundings. VR is also used in reducing anxiety feelings for patients before and after surgeries (Bradley University, 2019). The technology is also significant in the treatment of post-traumatic stress disorders. Augmented reality (AR) works as the VR but adds on to the existing instead of creating a new environment Bradley (University, 2019). It modifies the users’ experience in aspects such as wellness apps and surgical direction.
Artificial intelligence (AI) uses software algorithms to execute tasks that require human intelligence for completion. The technology impacts billing and digitalized supply chains, development, and healthcare research (Bradley University, 2019). The Internet of Things (I0T) is a connected network of tools to collect and exchange data. It is essential in impacting care collaboration, emerging operations, and monitoring patients remotely (Bradley University, 2019). Drones are vehicles and aircraft without drivers or coordinators that positively impact the digitized supply chain, delivery of goods, and emergency and disaster response. Robots can augment, automate, and assist in varying human activities in health care (Bradley University, 2019). They impact digitalized behavioral health services, monitoring and caring of patients remotely. Blockchain aid in confirming successful transactions, increasing the record’s security through fraud prevention and consumer protection identity and keeping personal health information (Bradley University, 2019). The healthcare industry’s automation raises the need for health care professionals and other staff to get educated on emerging technologies. The teams also ought to be open to any incoming workflow changes (Bradley University, 2019). Health care teams should take advantage of the benefits yielded by automated technology. However, they should acquire assistance and understand new technology to avoid unpleasant experiences on patients.
Capturing of Patient’s Medical Records
Healthcare settings can capture information regarding patient’s medical records either electronically or manually. However, the emerging trends in technology desire hospitals to shift from manual to electronic capturing and recording data. According to Laird-Maddox et al. (2014), an Electronic Health Record (EHR) is a systematized capturing of the patient electronically stored health data in a digital format. Technology makes it possible and easy for healthcare professionals to share the records across different departments and health care settings through the network-connected information systems in the emerging trends of technology. Laird-Maddox et al. (2014) argue that a wide range of information, including demographics, medical history, laboratory test results, vital signs, medication and allergies, radiology images, immunization status, billing information, and personal data like weight and age, is recorded electronically in healthcare. Electronic health records’ prevalence increases opportunities for optimizing the healthcare systems and the captured data to facilitate research. The patients’ information collected for study-related clinical aspects is captured in the medical record historically. However, some data sets are captured and recorded manually. “Study-related data are manually reentered into an electronic case report form in a research system” (Laird-Maddox et al., 2014). Electronic and manual data capturing in the emerging trends work in a collaborative process to yield the final records of information stored in healthcare.
However, manual transcription reduces through the utilization of the information collected in EHR. The electronic capturing and recording data yield significant benefits, including improved quality of the information and streamlined workflow for capturing research data (Lair...
